Five Things You Should Know About IREM’s New Headquarters

IREM is celebrating the opening of its new headquarters office. The officers and senior staff recently cut the ribbon, and staff are settling in. This is an exciting change as the summer comes to a close. Here’s what you need to know about the new headquarters for your association.

    1. The office remains in the REALTOR Building on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

IREM headquarters is still in Chicago, still on Michigan Avenue. When the lease came up for renewal, there was never any thought of relocating. Chicago is a great city and a center of culture and commerce. We love it here, and we’re pretty sure you love visiting in your volunteer activities.

    1. The office will be certified LEED for Commercial Interiors Gold and under the WELL Building Standard.

These sustainability certifications allow IREM to walk the talk. Sustainability and green building has come a long way in the past decade or more—but demand is increasing. IREM wants to be a leader in helping real estate management professionals meet this demand.

We have new education on Deep Retrofit Value. We launched the IREM Certified Sustainable Property certification in 2014—and Version 2.0 is coming in October 2015. We have regular sustainability webinars. JPM articles. Real Estate Management News stories. IREM Blog posts such as this one. And we plan to do more. In certifying the new office space, we are putting these concepts into practice.

    1. This means that the new IREM headquarters office is also a learning tool.

If you visit you the office, look for, or ask someone to point out:

        • The standing work stations

          Standing Desk

        • The ENERGY STAR office equipment and appliances
        • The healthy, energy-efficient task lighting

          Desk Lamp

        • The healthy snack options
        • The wellness library

All of these items, and more, are helping the office achieve LEED and WELL. When owners and tenants express interest in these certifications, you will be able to have an informed conversation after touring the new headquarters.

    1. Also helping us achieve certifications is the building itself.

Site and base building factors can go a long way toward sustainability certifications for interiors. The Michigan Avenue location gives IREM staff and visitors access to CTA trains and buses, Metra suburban trains, bicycle share stations, and even water taxis. (A water taxi down the heart of the Chicago River on a beautiful day is a treat!) These public transportation options help earn certification points. The area has plenty of walking routes as well, and world-class parks and green spaces are close by.

The REALTOR Building is LEED- and ENERGY STAR-certified—so base building systems, O&M policies, and facility amenities such as bike racks and a fitness center also help with IREM’s certifications.

    1. All of these great features are about the people that make IREM an exceptional organization.

The WELL Building Standard was designed and implemented based on credible scientific and medical research. Emerging evidence on the health and productivity benefits of sustainable real estate is compelling, and the focus on how buildings affect the environment outside is shifting to how they impact the people inside.

      Natural light

Comfortable temperatures, low-emitting materials, healthy lighting, noise control, access to nutritious foods and purified water, optimal ventilation, opportunities to be active, and efficient use of resources all factor into creating an indoor environment that fosters wellness. The new IREM office benefits the people who work and serve here everyday.
